Everyone On Your Team Has Talents That Can Be Improved.
People Development Is A Leadership Priority.
Not surprisingly, the 2017 FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For annual study showed that the best companies are committed to employee development. In fact, the companies on this list devote an average of 65 hours per annum toward developing salaried employees. They also invest an average of 58 hours per year for the development of their hourly workers.
A focus on people development differentiates the best companies to work for from all others. A focus on people development is also one of the actions that differentiates great leaders from good leaders.
Everyone on your team has talents that can be improved. These can be the functional skills needed to perform their jobs, or the interpersonal skills required to get work done in collaboration or cooperation with others. Great leaders ensure that all members of their teams receive on-going development, both formally and informally.
This is nothing new. For, as John Quincy Adams noted centuries ago, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” Unfortunately, however, a focus by leaders on developing the skills of their people has been misplaced in recent decades by an overemphasis on quarterly profits and other short-term performance measurements.
So how do you go about being an excellent leader of people development?
Something to think about this week!
