Key Messages for Global Workplace Wellness Summit

As leaders around the world begin to stage the return to the workplace, they have an opportunity to display a stronger level of emotional intelligence toward their employees, including empathy, adaptability, and flexibility.

This is one of the key messages that I will be delivering next week at the virtual Global Workplace Wellness Summit. It has been my honor to chair the Leadership, Wellbeing and Engagement Committee for this important event.

Workplace wellness is increasingly becoming a major concern for organizations around the work, with a focus on how to better manage workplace stress and burnout.

As well it should. For this is not just a workplace issue, but a societal one that increasingly impacts the workplace. Here are some alarming statistics:

  • 11% of US adults said they had seriously contemplated suicide in recent months, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
  • CDC also reports that 25% of young adults (18-24) had considered suicide in the past month!
  • The American Heart Association predicts a 67% increase in dementia, stroke, and Alzheimer’s Disease by 2030, impacting over 10 million Americans and 76 million people globally. By the way, this prediction is pre-pandemic. I can guarantee you these numbers will increase directly as a result of the pandemic and the stress caused from lengthy lockdowns and social isolation.

As we will discuss in next week’s conference, workplace wellness needs to encapsulate physical, emotional, and mental wellness. Along with insurances of psychological and physical safety in the workplace.

A couple of the other messages our committee will be sharing next week include: Workplace Stress Is Costly

Today’s VUCA environment increases stress and uncertainty. How this is handled by leaders can alleviate a great deal of the stress employees will encounter. Hence, the importance on transparency and open communications is paramount in helping employees put things in the proper perspective for their emotional

Leaders also need to be aware of the increased societal anxiety resulting from uncertainty and changing policies from governments.

Lack of respect in the workplace, which unfortunately remains still all to common, cascades into employee non-wellbeing and impacts the bottom line. After all, unhealthy workers are likely to be highly effective and productive, even when they do show up to work instead of taking sick leave.

It should be an informative and interesting conference. I hope you can attend as many of the sessions as possible.

In the next blog I will share The Business Case for Workplace Wellness, while future blog posts will include why organizations need to focus immediately on burnout and workplace stress.
